Ayan goes digital internationally

The first big release of summer 2009, Ayan is releasing worldwide on April 3. This is the first Tamil movie to go digital in the overseas market, thus setting a new trend. The high quality digital transmission will be screened in Bay Area and New Jersey. It will be a treat to watch Suriya sizzling with Tamanna in the digital format.

The movie, distributed and marketed by Narmadha Media, will be screened in 15 cities from this Friday: New Jersey, Bay Area, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Connecticut, Boston, Detroit, Seattle, Atlanta, Virginia, Minneapolis, Kansas and Phoenix. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are already topping the charts and have increased expectations for the movie. Produced by AVM and Sun Pictures, Ayan is directed by K.V. Anand.

Anushka wants more Tamil films

The Anushka, who reports said was not interested in doing a Tamil film after ‘Rendu’, says she has pinned her hopes on Tamil cinema now and will concentrate on her career here. “My ‘Arundhathee’ might be a blockbuster but I’m not inspired to do the same genre of films over and again. Also, I’m focusing on building my career in Tamil now,” says the actress who has landed herself three roles with big heroes in Tamil.

The biggest of them all will be ‘Vettaikkaran’ in which she is paired with Vijay. The scene involving the hero and the heroine meeting for the first time in a railway station was shot recently, and those in the crew say it’s one of the funniest introduction scenes ever. Following ‘Vettaikkaaran’, Anushka will pair with Suriya in his next film, ‘Singam’. The film, directed by Hari, should give her a break showcasing her as a village girl, as Hari often does. The movie will be Hari’s third with Suriya, after ‘Aaru’ and ‘Vel’. And then, she has also signed to do a film with Karthi, titled ‘Siruthai’. With so many films, Anushka is all set to make a mark in Tamil cinema.

Actress Vega plays a teacher role in her next movie

When we saw Vega the first time, she was the school kid kidnapped by her father’s best friend. Well, in her second Kollywood offering, she has graduated from student to teacher! Yes, is her upcoming Pasanga, Vega plays a kindergarten teacher and she insists she had a lot of fun with the role. “In Saroja, I was surrounded by a gang of gungho boys! And in Pasanga, I was surrounded by a bunch of naughty boys! We had fun on the sets of Saroja, but this was something else. Being around these kids was fun,” she laughs. So did she have to play the teacher off-screen as well to keep the little pranksters focused? “Well, very rarely! Sometimes they were really naughty and we had to be a little strict with them.

But I figured the only way to get around them was to approach them as a friend. An occasional dose of the teacher-attitude was ok, but mostly I worked with them like we were all pals. We used to play cards or hide-and-seek in the evenings, watch stuff on my laptop… it was loads of fun,” she says. “The kids are the highlight of the film. They are so full of energy and life. It was great working with them.”

Suriya’s desire to produce

Tamil cinema has been seeing many changes recently, good stories and realistic narration have become buzzwords instead of star value. When asked about this in a recent interview, Suriya said that this was definitely a good trend and that good cinema will always be appreciated by the audience irrespective of its star value. When asked whether he would like to act in any such movies he said that it was difficult for him to completely change track at the moment because he too has a fan following who expected certain elements from his films.

However, he added that seeing the stills of the upcoming Subramaniapuram Sasikumar produced Pasanga has inspired him a lot and he would definitely like to produce one such film. He said that such a venture would happen soon.

Tamanna’s disappointment over Vijay

Tamanna is having a great time in Kollywood. A few films of hers await release and she is busy with the shooting of many more. She has been very lucky in terms of the offers that she has been receiving, starring opposite some of the top heroes of Kollywood like Dhanush and Suriya.

It is in the midst of this that she received an offer to act alongside Vijay in Vettaikaran. But she did not even consider the offer and turned it down. She was so full with commitments that there was no way she could have given her consent to another full fledged heroine role. The actress is said to have stated her disappointment at her inability to star opposite Vijay and is said to have expressed eagerness to do so in the future.

Vijay goes for a new look!

The first schedule of Ilayathalapathy Vijay?s new film Vettaikaran is over at Rajahmundry in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The grapevine is abuzz that Vijay is spotting a new look for the film, which will not be revealed immediately. The film produced by A V M Balasubramaniam and directed by Babu Shivam, has Anushka as heroine. The buzz is that the film is an action packed family entertainer laced with comedy and sentiment. As per sources in the unit, the hero introduction song was picturised in which Vijay?s son Sanjay has danced with his dad against an Ayyanar temple background.

Then hero meeting heroine for the first time in a very comic manner was shot in a Railway Station. Added to that some talkie portions were also canned in and around Rajahmundry. The second schedule of the film is to start in Chennai in the second week of April, and it will be shot mostly at AVM studio including a set song. Vijay Antony is composing the second song likely to be a duet.

Asin to shake a leg with Dhoni!

Asin, the hottest babe in Bollywood has signed a record endorsement deal to shake a leg with Indian cricket captain M. S Dhoni! Asin and Dhoni will now endorse Big Bazaar and be their Brand Ambassadors. Big Bazaar is a chain of hypermarkets in India, with more than 100 stores in operation. It is a subsidiary of Pantaloon Retail India Ltd’s, Future Group, and follows the business model of world famous Wal-Mart. The buzz is that she signed this deal for a record amount, the highest she has taken for any endorsement so far. And according to a spokesperson of Big Bazaar, Asin and MS Dhoni were selected as they are the youth icons of India. The photo shoot happened in Mumbai a month back and the television ad will be canned after Dhoni comes back from his successful tour of New Zealand.

Today Asin, after the mega success of Ghajini is the all India brand ambassador for seven major products, and makes more money out of her endorsements than through films. She is undoubtedly a major brand in the country. A survey taken by a national agency says- “Asin in all her television ads comes across as a friendly neighborhood person who coaxes you to try the product; which has caught the imagination of the viewers. Among movie stars, she is the hottest to endorse consumer goods”.

Sneha opts out of ‘Chandramukhi’

Suriya’s audacious efforts for ‘Ayan’

For continuing his six pack saga, Suriya will be back to the screens to flaunt his toned abs and mesmerizing acting in Sun Pictures’ ‘Ayan’. ‘Kallori’ girl Tamannah after sharing screen space with Dhanush in the super hit ‘Padikkadhavan’, pairs up with Suriya. Produced by AVM Productions, the latest trailer of the film featured a handsome Suriya walking the deserts and fighting the baddies audaciously in stunt scenes.

The Hollywood style of swinging down the bar and lifting the heavy barrel to knock out the henchmen looked awesome in the promo. But, very few knew that Suriya had a torn muscle while trying to support the weight of the iron rod. Albeit the painful injury, the actor continued with the scene that was shot extensively for seven days under the direction of stunt master Kanal Kannan. With just the basic first aid, Suriya did the sequence despite repetitive advice from the crew to pack up and continue later. This is just a piece of his meticulous work to exceed expectations with ‘Ayan’ that is set to hit the screen on April 3rd.

Shriya’s last chance in Bollywood!

Can Shriya Saran make it big in Bollywood and fulfill her dreams? The answer will be known this Friday (March 27), when her long in the making Ek- The Power of One will be released. Shriya has done 35 odd films mainly in Telugu and Tamil and only four films in Hindi. But all her Hindi releases including the last Mission Istanbul were colossal flops. So let us hope the film clicks and she makes it big in her home state. Shriya need not be worried as she has the pick of films in Kollywood- Kanthasamy, Jaggubhai, Kutty, Thoranai, Chikku Bukku, and is all set to be the number one in 2009!

Tamanna’s tall, dark hero

Vishal’s Theeradha Villayattu Pillai, which will be directed by Thiru, will commence very soon. However, the team is still in the process of selecting the heroines. Sources reveal that there would be three heroines in the film. While Nayathara was touted to be a strong contender for the role, it now looks like Tamanna will bag the role. It may be recalled that Tamanna went to sign up a project - Payya - after Nayan refused to star in it. The other heroine is said to be Reema Sen. Meanwhile, there was a buzz that Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu could be signed up. But the actress is apparently not interested in south Indian films as she finds the language difficult to speak. With Theeradha Villayattu Pillai, Tamanna’s status in Kollywood will go several notches up, industry sources say.

Asin - Success has many pitfalls

Success has many pitfalls. Asin who has reached dizzy heights after the mega success of Ghajini is in the news for the wrong reasons.

A 55-year-old woman Sudalaivadivu has approached the Chennai city police commissioner alleging that her son Nallamuthu Kumaraswamy (23), who had worked as the touchup boy of Asin has gone missing. Asin told “He came to Mumbai as a touch boy. Later he met with an accident and all his treatment expenses, which amounted to a few lakhs were taken care by us. We also brought his mother down to Mumbai to look after him and after recovery, he said that he wanted to go back to Chennai and start some business”.

Continues Asin: “On January 21, he voluntarily resigned. All his dues were settled and he left for Chennai. My dad has registered this information of his resignation with the Oshiwara police station and produced the vouchers that all his payments were settled which a regular procedure in Mumbai”. However, a source close to Nallamuthu Kumaraswamy in Tirunelveli states that he had started a business in partnership with a friend that incurred huge losses. And realizing that he could not cough up the money, by working with Asin, he left the job. This is not the first time that top actors are targeted by their staff who wants to grab some media attention by making false allegations.

In the case of Asin, the biggest mistake they did was to take the staff they had in Chennai with them when they shifted to Mumbai. Remember that earlier, a lady from Chennai had made accusations that Asin was forcedly keeping her daughter as domestic help against her will, which was sorted out when the girl herself gave her statement against her mother claiming that she was happy working with Asin.

Bipasha Basu won’t pair with Vishal

Bipasha Basu is laying emphasis on an area her fans would hardly care about: her pronunciation! The sex siren, who has earlier featured in a blink-and-miss role in Vijay’s ‘Sachin’, said she was not interested in doing both Tamil and Telugu films. Birdies in Kollywood have it that she was approached to play an important role in Vishal’s forthcoming film. When asked about it, the actress said she was diffident in acting in a language she was not familiar with. “It’s never an issue of who the hero is or how he looks when I agree to a script. The most important factor is if I understand the language that I’m expected to mouth. I don’t understand both Telugu and Tamil and so haven’t taken up offers from there,” says the actress.

‘Raavana’ shooting gets delayed

Despite managing the dates of the hottest stars of Indian filmdom, from Abhi and Ash to Vikram and Prithviraj, shooting for the stunt portions of Maniratnam’s ‘Raavana’ has been stalled. The reason? A serious injury of its stunt master Peter Haynes. Peter Haynes met with an accident a month ago during the shoot of a Telugu film ‘Mahatheera’, after which he suffered from 19 fractures. The accident, which happened in February, has dearly costed two of the most anticipated films of the year, ‘Endhiran’ and ‘Raavana. Says Peter Haynes himself about his injury, “I am part of both Rajini’s ‘Endhiran’ and Maniratnam’s ‘Raavana’. For ‘Endhiran’, a few action sequences were canned with me moving about in a wheel chair and instructing the stuntmen. “But that was possible only for a few milder stunt blocks,” he adds. On account of Peter Haynes inability to involve in heavy duty stunts, the shooting of the action portions of both these films has been delayed.

Shruthi Haasan’s foray with Kamal Haasan

With his esteemed ‘Dasavatharam’ fetching him laurels across far-flung corners of the globe, Universal Hero Kamal Haasan has commenced his remake version of ‘A Wednesday’. Titled ‘Thalaivan Irukiran’ in Tamil, the Telugu version has been named as ‘Ee Nadu’. The shooting had hit the floors before couple of days in Hyderabad and would be simultaneously filmed in Telugu and Tamil. When fathers are treading elatedly launching their heirs into tinsel town on respective panoramas,Kamal Haasan is introducing his daughter Shruthi Haasan with this magnum opus. Don’t expect the young lass making her onscreen appearance in lead role. Uh-huh! Shruthi who has been churning out many musical albums makes her debut as music director with ‘Thalaivan Irukiran’. Though her part goes inclusive of scoring signature song, she’s involved in deep discussions with her crew in spelling the best. Once Shruthi had represented her dad for collecting Filmfare Awards where she uttered, ‘Hope, One day I would erase my father’s records and bag them on my own records’. Of course, the girl is on for the hotfooted task.

Sanjay dances with dad Vijay in Vettaikaran

Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s son Sanjay (7) is making a special appearance with dad in a song for his new film Vettaikaran, produced by AVM Balasubramaniam! Sources close to the unit confirmed that Sanjay has done a dance number with Vijay shot by cameraman Gopinath and directed by Babu Shivam in Rajahmundry. Shobhi, who excels in mass songs, choreographed it in front of an Ayyanar temple set. Those on the sets said Sanjay a chip of the old block, as he danced well to his dad’s steps and impressed everybody. The old timers on the sets says that it was coincidental that Kamal Hassan too made his debut like Sanjay, as a child artist in a film produced by AVM (Kalathur Kannamma)! The song tuned by Vijay Antony is a high energy peppy fast number with lyrics by Kapilan. Says Vijay Antony: “It is a real fast number, better than my Nakku Mukka or Aathichudi. It is the introduction song of Vijay sir and has been composed to suit his style and dance.”

Dr Trisha to arrive on 27th March

After a prolonged tenure with Naan Kadavul, Arya has moved on to his next project Sarvam, directed by Vishnu Vardhan, where he will be seen with Trisha for the first time on screen. Sarvam is supposed to be a romantic and an emotional thriller with two sets of stories pre- and post- interval.
